Ovum

54”Wx45”H (2024)

I love how evocative oval shapes are. They suggest eggs and eyes and flower petals and so much more. In this quilt, I superimposed four large hollow ovals on the top of the quilt by changing the color of thread from different shades of orange in the background to different shades of purple in the body of the ovals. This is part of a series of four-color quilts that use intensive hand stitching to create secondary designs that interact with the fabric below. In this quilt, I tried several new things: using the lightest value fabric at the center and moving progressively darker, quilting in a circular fashion rather than edge to edge and creating more texture by using different values of the two thread colors.

This quilt is made from shot cotton fabric and is hand stitched with perle cotton thread. It has cotton batting and backing.

Ovum has shown in Quiltcon 2025 in the Modern Traditionalism category, in Spaces Between, an exhibit co-sponsored the Surface Design Association and Florida Craft Gallery, where it was awarded third place, and in Quilts Unlimited 2025 at View Arts Center.
